WeakEnd Assignment – Your Pastor

Credit:  Barna Research

“Behold the Lord God will come with might, with His arm ruling for Him.  Behold, His reward is with Him and His recompense before Him.  Like a shepherd He will tend His flock, in His arm He will gather the lambs and carry them in His bosom; He will gently lead the nursing ewes.” Isaiah 40:10-11

“So when they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, ‘Simon, son of John, do you love Me more than these?’ He said to Him, ‘Yes, Lord; You know that I love You.’  He said to him, ‘Tend My lambs.’

“He said to him again a second time, ‘Simon, son of John, do you love Me?’  He said to Him, ‘Yes, Lord; You know that I love You.’  He said to him, ‘Shepherd My sheep.’

“He said to him the third time, ‘Simon, son of John, do you love Me?’  Peter was grieved because He said to him the third time, ‘Do you love Me?’  And he said to Him, ‘Lord You know all things; You know that I love You.’  Jesus said to him, ‘Tend My sheep.’” John 21:15-17

Barna Research recently completed The State of Pastors, Volume 2, (created in partnership with World Vision, Brotherhood Mutual, RightNow Media and World Impact), and the overarching conclusion:  ‘When pastors align personally with their mission, the church benefits corporately.’

It got me to thinking how the challenges of today could either inspire or discourage our pastors.  What a joy it is to know that God is not just calling pastors by name -- as He did Peter -- but He is creating a new sensitivity and appreciation in their hearts to the growing need for them.

Assignment

1.    Set aside an hour and find a place where you will not be interrupted.

2.    Bring your Bible, notebook, something to write with, a way to watch the videos in this devotion and a refreshment

3.    Settle in, quieten your heart and pray that the Lord will help you have more understanding of the work of your pastor.

4.    Open your notebook to a fresh page, date it and then read these passages:

5.    From what you’ve learned take time to watch this video, write down the key points and consider the primary role of your pastor.

By – Grace to You (2 min 55 sec)

6.    Write a thank you note to your own pastor, thanking him for his faithful study of God’s Word and the sacrifices and work he does that no one but the Lord sees and be sure to deliver it.

7.    Add your pastor and his family to your personal prayer list and pray faithfully for them in their stated and unspoken needs.

Take care with love, especially His, Darlene (who still prays for you daily)

YouTube – What is ANZAC Day All About

By The Incredible Journey (4 min 2 sec)

“All things are wearisome; man is not able to tell it.  The eye is not satisfied with seeing, nor is the ear filled with hearing.  That which has been is that which will be, and that which has been done is that which will be done.  So there is nothing new under the sun.

“Is there anything of which one might say, ‘See this, it is new’?  Already it has existed for ages which were before us.  There is no remembrance of earlier things; and also of the later things which will occur, there will be for them no remembrance among those who will come later still.”  Ecclesiastes 1:9-11

“He has made everything appropriate in its time.  He has also set eternity in their heart, yet so that man will not find out the work which God has done from the beginning even to the end.

“I know that there is nothing better for them than to rejoice and do good in one lifetime; moreover, that everyman who eats and drinks sees good in all his labour – it is the gift of God.

“I know that everything God does will remain forever; there is nothing to add to it and there is nothing to take from it, for God has so worked that men should fear Him.  That which is has been already and that which will be has already been, for God seeks what has passed by.” Ecclesiastes 3:11-15

War seems to be a constant throughout the ages.  Certainly, the Old Testament pages are filled with conflict.  Someone once told me a war has started every twenty minutes somewhere in the world since the beginning of modern history.

I’m unsure where they got that statistic, but it seems since Cain killed Able, fighting has been the rule rather than the exception.

Yet God is not surprised.  History repeats itself so we can avoid repeating the same mistakes…if we will only pay attention.

YouTube – How to GROW SPIRITUALLY closer to GOD

Video 1 – The word of God

By – DLM Christian Life (13 min 2 sec)

“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our affliction so that we will be able to comfort those who are in any affliction with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.

“For just as the sufferings of Christ are ours in abundance, so also our comfort is abundant through Christ.

“But if we are afflicted, it is for your comfort and salvation; or if we are comforted, it is for your comfort, which is effective in the patient enduring of the same sufferings which we also suffer; and our hope for you is firmly grounded, knowing that as you are sharers of our sufferings, so also you are sharers of our comfort.”  II Corinthians 1:3-7

It must be a regulation ‘Parent Statement’ from the ‘Raising Kids Well Manual’: ‘This is going to hurt me more than it hurts you,’ when punishment must be meted out.  And every kid thinks this is silly, because obviously punishment hurts the one being punished!

And yet…after you grow up you begin to have a paradigm shift to realise that unless you are heartless, having to discipline or correct someone is really difficult and it does hurt you.

God’s desire and aim for His children is that they grow increasingly into the image of His beloved Son (II Corinthians 3:18, Ephesians 4:15).  God is ‘sad’ when we disobey and comforts us through our times of discipline so that we grow strong in Him.

Take care with love, especially His, Darlene (who still prays for you daily)
